Nevada County was formed on March 20, 1871 from parts of Columbia, Hempstead, and Ouachita counties. The county was named for its similarity in shape to the state of Nevada, only its pronunciation is different ("nuh-VAY-duh" County). Nevada County covers approximately 617 square miles and borders Hempstead County to the west, Ouachita County to the east, Columbia and Lafayette counties to the south, and Pike County to the north.
